The Division for the Visually Impaired (DVI) partners with families from the earliest stages to ensure children with visual impairments have full access to learning, growth, and independence.
If your child is blind or has low vision, our Education team can help them build the confidence they need to learn, grow and be independent at home, at school and in life. We can also help you understand your child’s needs, advocate for inclusive education, and access the tools that make learning possible.
Birth to Three Program
Play-based learning in the home and in early intervention programs helps the youngest children develop visual (sight), tactile (touch) and auditory (sound) strategies needed for school.
K – 12 Program
Our certified Teachers for the Visually Impaired work in every school in Delaware—including charter and private schools—to make sure children who are blind or have low vision receive the same quality education as their peers from kindergarten through high school. We may teach your child directly, or consult with their teachers and school staff on ways to adapt classroom materials, assess and monitor your student’s progress.
We work directly with your child, as needed, to help them gain confidence with:
- Braille and large print materials
- Orientation and mobility training
- Assistive technology and accessible learning tools
- Vision-specific aids and equipment
Our job is not only to support your child in academics, but also to help them build confidence and independence to carry them beyond the classroom.
Assistive Tools and Materials
DVI makes sure students have the tools they need to succeed in school, including:
- Braille or large print textbooks and handouts
- Magnification devices and screen readers
- Adaptive technology customized to the student’s learning style
- Training for families and educators on how to use these tools effectively
