    Independent Living Services

Losing some or all of your sight can be overwhelming and disorienting as it affects the way you manage your daily activities.

Our trained Vision Rehabilitation Therapists will help you with adaptive techniques, tools and strategies that fit your needs and lifestyle at any age or level of vision loss. Hands-on training includes:

    • Clothing – dressing and laundry
    • Personal hygiene
    • Home organization
    • Meal preparation
    • Kitchen skills
    • Appliance use
    • Time management
    • Communication skills
    • Financial management

    Communication Skills

We can help you learn communications techniques including:

    • Contracted or beginner Braille, where every letter is spelled out
    • Uncontracted or advanced Braille which uses shorthand symbols for commons words and letter groups
    • Video magnification devices

    Peer Support

DVI can connect you with a trained volunteer who also has a visual impairment. They can help you adjust to vision loss, and most communication is done by phone.

    Sensitivity Training

DVI offers sensitivity training for groups, organizations and professionals who want to learn more about visual impairment. Interactive sessions cover assistive technology, respectful communication and practical techniques for guiding and supporting people with vision loss. Participants will:

    • Learn about different types of eye disease
    • Simulate basic tasks while blindfolded
    • Learn about sighted guide techniques
    • Explore the world of assistive technology, low vision techniques and devices
    • Learn what to do, and what not to do, when meeting a person who is blind or has a visual impairment
