DVI’s Resource Center features accessible educational and instructional materials in alternate formats, including to Braille, large print and digital versions to students with visual impairments in Delaware’s K-12 school system.
Many of the materials are produced in-house by DVI clients with support from specially trained staff and volunteers. DVI also partners with the Delaware Department of Corrections and its Men With a Message Braille Program. In this program, individuals who are incarcerated at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center are trained to transcribe books and materials into Braille. This rehabilitative program provides the inmates marketable skills upon release, while aiding individuals with visual impairment. The program employs Braillists, all certified by the Library of Congress, as well as a large print producer.
What We Provide
The IMRC:
- Produces and distributes Braille and large print books, worksheets, and assessments
- Offers digitally formatted instructional materials that work with screen readers and magnification tools
- Maintains an extensive library of accessible textbooks and equipment
- Supports students with assistive technology tailored to their learning environment
Requests from external agencies and organizations may be accepted, depending on the availability of production resources.
Made Possible Through Community Partnership
Many of our Braille and large print materials are produced in-house by DVI staff and volunteers. A key contributor to this work is the Men With A Message program at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. This unique collaboration trains and certifies Braille transcribers (certified by the Library of Congress), who help ensure students across Delaware receive timely access to the materials they need.
